Have our content habits changed forever?

It’s a shock to no one that the likes of Netflix and Amazon are taking over the TV viewing world. However, you might have, in the recent clamour to watch the latest series of Game of Thrones – entirely missed the arrival of YouTube Red.

At Squared we are well aware that YouTube is a video powerhouse of viral hits, music videos and unique shows you cannot find anywhere else. Which is why we in the marketing world are constantly striving to optimise, and capitalise on this the daddy of online video platforms. Digital disruption is one of our favourite things after all!

YouTube Red is a new paid monthly subscription service with several perks that make your viewing experience better. It’s currently only available in the US for now, but whenever it hits your screens is sure to be your latest distraction.

It started out life as an advert free version of Youtube, where you could download videos and conduct some minimal engagements offline. However, starting very soon YouTube Red subscribers will get access to new members-only original shows and movies from top YouTubers.

It’s possible that down the line new content creators will launch new channels and shows through Red, though for now YouTube is focusing on existing ‘creators’. At point of writing, I can’t seem to get confirmation of a ‘Netflix Originals’ style set-up coming to YouTube Red but there are a great number of happily grinning producers that suggest otherwise. Such is the rumour around the Netflix office anyway.

Regardless the outcome, and keeping in mind the likelihood of Apple TV throwing a curve ball early 2017, the battle for video content is only heating up.
