A May 2017 graduate of Squared Online, John Grimley has truly made a name for himself as a freelance writer and editor – working with leaders in the law, governmental relations, and financial services to help escalate their businesses on a global scale.
To learn more about writing in the digital space, John enrolled in Squared Online in the spring of 2017 to help better understand how to successfully write for his clients’ digital platforms.

Tell us a bit about yourself:
I’m a professional freelance writer and editor with a specialism in thought leadership. I have many years of creative experience in the law, governmental relations, and financial services – wearing many hats in each of those capacities.
In 2009, I transitioned to a more freelance-based capacity after the economy took a dive and have found a lot of success in freelance – traveling to financial and political capitals all over the worlds to meet to with prospective clients (I’m in Japan currently!) and have been able to build up my client base from previous projects and work.
Why did you choose to take Squared Online?
One of the reasons I took Squared was because of the drastic changes to the discipline of writing in recent years. I knew I wanted to learn more about writing for the digital space but wasn’t sure how to practically go about it.
I was also very keen to learn in a more non-traditional setting. The concept that attracted me to Squared Online was both the online learning aspect as well as the group setting experiences. It was important to me to not only have the flexibility to learn remotely, but to also be able to collaborate with others.
Was there a module you found particularly useful?
The digital channels and technology module were the most influential for me; mainly because they covered many things I wasn’t aware of in the digital marketing space. There are so many aspects to digital marketing that it’s difficult to truly master all of the aspects that make up a great marketer.
The great thing about Squared Online is that it helped me to understand my role in the context of an organization’s digital marketing department.
I’m now able to communicate with a wider clientele base which, in turn, has helped me to secure more business. I’m now able to confidently meet with SEO, PPC, and PR agencies, and truly communicate with them on a professional level and comprehend exactly what they do and what they need to grow their businesses. Squared Online definitely helped me build confidence about my role in digital marketing in both context comprehension and skill.
What would be your best advice to anyone considering Squared Online as their next marketing education venture?
I believe the most important thing to understand is that Squared Online can help to improve the professional capabilities of any type of marketer. From freelance copywriters to marketing data analysts. This course offers up a lot of great insights for anyone looking to grow their skill set.
The course itself is very user-friendly, the instructors are very knowledgeable about the content, the course load isn’t overwhelming. It can definitely be completed by even the busiest of professionals.
I would also say that the course not only helps students better understand the current marketing economy, but really places an emphasis on preparing for future trends – something I believe is very important.
